Bow Hunting Practice Just Before The Season
While you might have kept busy all summer long in the backyard, the real bow hunting practice you should be doing is as close to the real scenario as it can be. Unfortunately this does not mean shooting in your backyard at a level target, or even on top of your truck or from an elevated position. True bow hunting practice before the season is taking the compound hunting bow and climbing up in a tree and shooting a 3D target exactly where you think the deer might appear or where you will be presented a shot. This will help you dial in on three key points Adam touches on above.
- Real Scenario – bow hunting practice from up in a tree stand, and using a 3D buck target is the absolute best practice you can do just before the season. It gets you familiar with shooting from a tree stand and the problems you might encounter such as a small platform, the tree in the way, and/or looking for limbs and branches in the way.
- Angle – Adam touches on this a lot. Pay attention to how you are shooting at the downward angle. Many bow hunters will simply drop their arm to the deer or target below. Instead use your hips as a fulcrum keeping your chest and arms when at full draw in synch and level.
- Difficult Positions- Adam also suggests practicing the shots that you will encounter, that are often not practiced or impossible other than in a tree stand. The one many hunters encounter is a deer at less than 5 yards. Practice when the deer or target is directly beneath you, letting you know where you need to aim, what pin to use, and exactly where you need to hit the deer in order to hit vitals.
